The Strait of Gibraltar is where the shadow first climbs onto land. From the top of the Rock you can watch the Moon's umbra race in across the meeting point of two continents and two seas — with totality lasting about 4 minutes 30 seconds.
The strait is only 14 km wide, so Tarifa in Spain and Tangier in Morocco go dark in the same instant. This is Europe's most accessible spot on the path — two hours by car from Málaga airport — so expect crowds.
With the morning Sun around 40 degrees high, the geometry is ideal for framing the corona above the sea horizon's sunset colors.
The summit of the Rock (426 m) is a premium seat: you can watch the Moon's shadow race in from the Atlantic at thousands of km/h, sweeping across the strait below. The cable car's capacity is limited and same-day tickets will vanish early — book ahead or climb at dawn. During totality, don't miss the 360-degree sunset glow ringing the horizon toward Africa.
